I have come to the conclusion that the show The Penguins of Madagascar is based on the Monkees. At least, the characters are.
For starters, I present exhibit A-E:
As Ringo would say:
First off, there's Skipper, who would make for a convincing Mike (which makes King Julian into Don Kirshner, I suppose). Then there's Kowalski who shares a love of science, and random bouts of insanity, with Micky. Next comes Private (the one who got me thinking of this originally) who is so like Davy--they're both pitted as the "cute" one, they're the only two of their respective groups that have a British accent, plus they're both shorter than the rest. Finally, Rico and Peter. While Peter is not destructive, both he and Rico are often overlooked as sources of intellect within their groups. Rico has a scar on his lip where Peter has a mole (but come on--have you ever seen a penguin with a mole?). Peter also had an obsession with Valerie Cartwright that was eerily similar to Rico's obsession with Ms. Perky.
Maybe it's just me. Maybe this is what happens when daylight savings steals an hour of my sleep. Maybe this is all just a coincidence. Maybe...
But then again, maybe not.
